Blagojevich invokes the Otter defense

Huh. Apparently I have been on hiatus from this blog for six weeks. Who knew? I have two choices - 1) just start posting again and ignore the gap, or 2) explain my reason for the absence. Screw it. Lets just get started again. It's not like I've been doing nothing. Last month I dug a hole in the ice of a frozen northern Michigan lake and failed to spear a fish. Last week I walked down to the SF Civic Center and covered the inauguration on the mobile blog. Busy busy busy.

The Year of The Ox begins on Monday. What better time to throw the yoke over my head, bend my back to the blogging plow and begin to turn over the manure in the fields of a new political season? To kick us off right, we need look no further than the San Francisco Chronicle which foreshadowed the Chinese new year with a giant load of ox crap in their headline on Wednesday - "The World Has Changed." - this apparently being the first time that we in the United States have ever inaugurated a new president in the history of the world. Or something. Ask the Chronicle. I don't know. It looked pretty much the same to me.

We'll pick up where we left off, with the honorable governor of the great state of Illinois - Rod Blagojevich. In a bid to keep his office in the face of an impeachment trial on Monday - Blago held a remarkable press conference yesterday to demand fair treatment.

As it turns out, Blago is a stalwart defender of the Constitution, American values of fairness, the presumption of innocence and due process. He is going to continue his good fight for the people of Illinois who in their collective wisdom elected him governor - twice. He would be abrogating his oath to the people of Illinois by participating in this impeachment travesty that starts Monday. He simply wants to be able to defend himself by calling witnesses like Rahm, McCain, Jesse Jackson Jr. and Barack Obama to testify on his behalf. That's all.

I love this guy. He is the gift that keeps on giving. This soap opera will never end.

Hat tip to commenter Prommie at Stinque for noting the remarkable similarity between Blago's defense in the press conference and The Otter's defense in Animal House. I ripped his observation for the mash-up at the top of the post.

I'll try to pick up the blogging pace. No promises.

UPDATE: 25-Jan-09
I'm not the only one with an affection for Blago... Maureen Dowd in the NYT today:

"I love Blago.

I love his beady little eyes. I love his Serbian shock of hair. I love his flaring nostrils. I love the way he jogs through the snow under indictment, like a stork in spandex trying to gallop. I love the way he compares himself in quick order to Pearl Harbor, Oliver Wendell Holmes and a dead cowboy."
